Stepwise Lithospheric Delamination Leads to Pulsed Cenozoic Uplifts of Central Tien Shan

چکیده

Abstract The Tien Shan provides an ideal site to study mechanism of intracontinental orogeny due distant effect Indo-Asian collision. We investigate lithospheric structures, in particular the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB), Central (CTS) using S wave receiver functions. results show distinct structures across orogen. Under southern CTS, LAB is shallower than that Tarim Basin; a 50 km vertical offset implies part lithosphere has been delaminated. middle two phases negative velocity gradient are obtained, which may indicate new and ongoing delamination underneath. northern CTS Kazakh Shield northward, stable although inclines southward slightly. periods under account well for pulsed uplifts at ~11-8 Ma ~5-0 Ma, respectively.

Late Quaternary slip rates across the central Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan, central Asia

[1] Slip rates across active faults and folds show that late Quaternary faulting is distributed across the central Tien Shan, not concentrated at its margins. Nearly every intermontane basin contains Neogene and Quaternary syntectonic strata deformed by Holocene north-south shortening on thrust or reverse faults. In a region that spans two thirds of the north-south width of the central Tien Sha...

Late Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the northwestern Tien Shan: New age estimates for the initiation of mountain building

The Tien Shan are the quintessential intracontinental range, situated more than 1000 km north of the suture between India and Asia. Their initiation and growth in the Cenozoic, however, remain poorly understood. In this study we present stratigraphic, detrital fission-track, and magnetostratigraphic results that provide a basis for reconstructing the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Kyrgyz Ra...

Tree-ring based drought reconstruction for the central Tien Shan area in northwest China

[1] A robust ring-width chronology developed from two sites of Picea schrenkiana in the central Tien Shan area of northwest China was employed to study regional drought variability. Our analyses demonstrate both temperature and precipitation have significant effects on tree growth, thus both should be considered for climate reconstruction. Regional drought history (1675–2002 A.D.) was therefore...

Active Thrusting and Folding Along the Northern Tien Shan and Late Cenozoic Rotation of the Tarim Relative to Dzungaria and Kazakhstan

We have studied geometries and rates of late Cenozoic thrust faulting and folding along the northern piedmont of the Tien Shan mountain belt, West of Urumqi, where the M=8.3 Manas earthquake occurred on December 23, 1906. The northern range of the Tien Shan, rising above 5000 m, overthrusts a flexural foredeep, filled with up to II ,000 m of sediment, of the Dzungarian basement. Our fieldwork r...

Seasonal Deuterium Excess in a Tien Shan Ice Core: Influence of Moisture Transport and Recycling in Central Asia

[1] Stable water isotope (dO, dD) data from a high elevation (5100 masl) ice core recovered from the Tien Shan Mountains, Kyrgyzstan, display a seasonal cycle in deuterium excess (d = dD 8*dO) related to changes in the regional hydrologic cycle during 1994–2000. While there is a strong correlation (r = 0.98) between dO and dD in the ice core samples, the regression slope (6.9) and mean d value ...
